Alternate Underground Manager – Lead, Influence & Shape the Future of Our Underground Operations

Based at Westgold’s underground operations, the Alternate Underground Manager plays a pivotal leadership role—driving productivity, strengthening safety culture, and guiding the technical direction of our mining teams.

Reporting to the Underground Manager and working an 8 days on / 6 days off roster, this statutory role (as required under WA Mines Regulations) positions you at the centre of daily underground operations. You’ll empower crews, influence mine planning decisions, support project execution, and mentor the next generation of mining engineers. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful operational and cultural impact while contributing directly to Westgold’s strategic goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, influence, and maintain a strong underground safety culture
  • Implement the Project Operational Safety Plan (POSP)
  • Model and reinforce Westgold’s values, policies, and operational standards
  • Align 13‑week plans with financial and calendar year goals
  • Review and approve underground mine plans (MIs, LENs, SENs, DAFs, MDAFs)
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and professional development to underground engineers
  • Manage surface and underground projects, including contractor oversight
  • Approve end‑of‑month accruals and present site budgets
  • Act as the Registered Manager when required
  • Prepare, review, and approve Capital Expenditure Requests (CERs)
  • Review operational reports and deliver weekly/monthly mining reports to the General Manager

  • Statutory compliance as Underground Manager
  • Leadership of Health & Safety initiatives
  • Oversight, review, and approval of all mine planning inputs
  • Driving business improvement and operational excellence
  • Leading execution of underground project works
  • Mentoring and developing junior engineers

Safety Leadership

  • Adhere to and model all site safety expectations
  • Promote and reinforce the POSP across operational teams
  • Actively advocate for safe, compliant, and productive work practices

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mining)
  • WA First Class Mine Manager’s Certificate
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Demonstrated experience in underground mine planning and production
